Activity Name: Developing Faculty Competencies in Assessment: An ACGME-UCLA Interactive Workshop
Needs Assessment:

UCLA is collaborating with the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) to co-sponsor regional faculty development opportunities dedicated to the needs of academic physicians. This faculty development course on the clinical evaluation and assessment of residents is based on a successful week-long course, sponsored by the ACGME. This focused three-day course will explore competency-based medical education and include hands-on activities to develop faculty competencies in assessment. Participants will learn and employ multiple assessment tools and strategies, including an experiential component developing skills in feedback and direct observation. This course provides faculty with a concentrated dose of material on evaluation and assessment.

The target audience is faculty seeking to increase their knowledge and skills around the topic of assessment including core teaching faculty, program directors, associate program directors, clerkship directors, and other interested faculty.

Course Objectives:

Attendees will be provided with a foundation of knowledge in clinical assessment and evaluation during this interactive course. The goal of the course is to enhance faculty skills in competency-based assessment of residents and fellows.

At the conclusion of this course, participants will be better able to:

  • Understand the goals and principles of competency-based medical education
  • Increase opportunities for trainee assessment that employ direct observation practices
  • Provide effective feedback to trainees during clinical education after actively participating in education simulations
  • Employ effective management strategies for their Clinical Competency Committees
  • Use milestones and Entrustable Professional Activities
  • Apply resident remediation strategies and approaches to foster successful interventions
  • Create effective assessment systems to bring to their home institutions
