Needs Assessment:
The third PCN CME module for 2015 is on Autistic Spectrum Disorder. Several PCN physicians have requested this since as children with ASD get older, they leave the care of pediatricians and now become the patients of our internal and family medicine doctors.  Autism and related disorders were believed to occur in 4 to 5 per 10,000 children; now the prevalence of autism has increased to 20 to 70 per 10,000 with the current rate estimated at 1 in every 68 children - 1 in 42 boys and 1 in 189 girls (Centers for Disease Control).   It is estimated that about 1.5 million people in the U.S. have an autism spectrum disorder (ASD).  The number of adults living with autism today is not known.  However, since some sources cite that about 80 percent of those individuals with autism are under the age of 22, the number of children with autism currently who will become adults over the next few years is huge.  Hence, this module is for both pediatric and adult physicians.

Target Audience
This module has been prepared for the primary care physicians who provide primary care to adults, adolescents and children within the UC Davis Primary Care Network to enhance their knowledge regarding managing and treating patients with autism spectrum disorder.
