Needs Assessment:
The second PCN CME Module is on the assessment and treatment of acute lower back pain.  This is a major Choosing Wisely topic as supported by the CDC and many other physician academies and associations.   This is also a P4P measure and shown is our most recent results.  We are at the 50th percentile but have great room for improvement.   The reading for this module re-enforces the fact the vast majority of patients with acute lower back get better on their own, do not need imaging, other evaluations, nor narcotics.

Target Audience
This module has been prepared for the primary care physicians who provide primary care to adults and children within the UC Davis Primary Care Network to enhance their knowledge regarding evaluating and treating patients who present with acute lower back pain.

Don’t obtain imaging studies in patients with non-specific low back pain.

In patients with back pain that cannot be attributed to a specific disease or spinal abnormality following a history and physical examination (e.g., non-specific low back pain), imaging with plain radiography, computed tomography (CT) scan, or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) does not improve patient outcomes.

Objectives:
After reading the course material, participants should be able to:

1. Describe the elements of the history and physical examination which should be included in the evaluation of a patient who presents with a complaint of acute lower back pain.
2. Discuss when and which imaging studies are indicated for the evaluation of acute lower back pain.
3. Discuss the recommended treatments for acute lower back pain.
