Activity Details
Activity Name:
MIND Summer Institute on Neurodevelopmental Disorders: Research to Practice
Needs Assessment:
This institute is intended to help participants keep pace with the latest advances in research on neurodevelopmental disorders and the implications for best practices in prevention, assessment and treatment. The focus is interdisciplinary and across the lifespan. Based on evaluations from the 2014 institute, special attention is paid to evidence-base practices for medical and educational interventions.

At the end of the activity, participants should be able to:
Discuss recent advances in understanding autism, fragile X syndrome, ADHD and other neurodevelopmental disorders. (Len & Pfiffner)
Describe how exposures to chemical pollutants prenatally and in early childhood can disrupt healthy brain development and how certain toxic chemicals can interact with other environmental, socioeconomic and genetic factors.
Discuss how to prevent exposures to neurodevelopmental toxics on individual, community and society levels as part of a whole systems approach to improving children?s health.
Describe how children with neurodevelopmental disorders may be affected by clinical levels of anxiety, and recognize the key components of cognitive-behavioral therapy and considerations regarding whether this treatment modality is a good fit for a child?s current abilities and needs.
Discuss the application of evidence-based strategies to classrooms serving children with autism spectrum disorder. (Aubyn)
Recognize the extent of the reading problems in students with autism, and describe efforts to develop and pilot interventions to support reading development.
