13th International Imaging Genetics Conference
Annual imaging genetics conference in Irvine, CA
Activity Details
Activity Name:
13th International Imaging Genetics Conference
Description:
Annual imaging genetics conference in Irvine, CA
Needs Assessment:
Needs Overview:
Gaps:
Clinicians tend to look for single genes as the cause of genetically based illnesses. While this approach applies to classical Mendelian diseases it does not explain complex neuropsychiatric illness such as schizophrenia and bipolar illness. A conceptual shift is required. This shift involves the realization that neuropsychiatric illness is not caused by a single gene but rather by contributions of multiple genes. Further, recognition is needed that genes do not function in isolation but rather are part of functional pathways or gene regulatory networks.
Best practices:
While the need for demonstrating competence as knowledge is applied to practice is essential, the information presented in this conference is cutting edge and therefore the goal is conceptual understanding, which can in the future be applied to practice as more data is available.
Course Objectives:
Objectives:
* Describe the consequence of transposon insertion on gene function related to schizophrenia.
* Better evaluate the diverse genome-wide findings influencing the risk for mental illness.
* Identify evidence for both specific and general risk factors as reflected by genetic variation in increasing the risk for developing cognitive and neuronal dysfunction in Down Syndrome and 22q11 Deletion Syndrome.
* Describe how genetic variation can affect brain imaging and proteonomics and metabolomics.
* Appreciate the genetic variability between neurons and their effects on brain function.
