Tobacco Dependence Treatment & Behavioral Health

Activity Description
The purpose of this course is to provide primary care, mental health, and substance use disorder professionals the knowledge necessary to assess and treat tobacco dependence in tobacco users with co-occurring psychiatric and/or addictive disorders. There is no fee to participate in this course.

Target Audience
This course is designed for primary care providers and behavioral health professionals interested in the most current research and effective interventions surrounding tobacco dependence treatment and behavioral health.

Method of Participation
The estimated time to complete this activity is 3 hours. To obtain credit, participants should answer the multiple-choice pre-test questions, view the course material, answer the multiple-choice post-test questions, and complete the evaluation form online to receive a certificate online immediately upon completion.

Educational Objectives

Following completion of this educational activity, learners should be able to:
    • Describe population-based trends of tobacco use among smokers with co-occurring mental health and/or substance use disorders.
    • Discuss the factors in mental health and addiction treatment settings that have served to maintain tobacco use in populations with mental health and/or substance use disorders.
    • Identify and implement evidence-based treatment for treating tobacco dependence.

Statement of Need
There are treatment gaps in clinical practice surrounding smoking cessation. Many clinicians lack time, resources, and knowledge to talk with their patients with behavioral health issues about the health effects of tobacco use, how to quit and stay quit, and where to refer them for additional help. As a result, there are missed opportunities to provide effective cessation treatment to those who would benefit from quitting tobacco, particularly for tobacco users with behavioral health conditions.
