Needs Assessment:
The UCI Division of Nephrology and Hypertension and Kidney Transplantation (UCI Nephrology) will present this full-day CME course on Saturday, February 29, 2020, Saturday, for physicians (nephrologists, internists, urologists, family practitioners, etc.) and allied health professionals (dietitians, nurses, social workers, etc.) titled, Nutritional and Dietary Management of Kidney Disease: A Patient-Care Approach.
The UCI Nephrology has teamed up with leading stakeholders and experts to take advantage of interests, expertise and insight for top-of-the line lectures and workshops.
Based on responses from nephrologists, 69% of these physicians confirmed that they never or rarely recommended LPD to their patients with CKD. However, 81 % of nephrologists appeared to be interested in learning more about this therapy. In this survey, 44% of the surveyed physicians suggested that the dedicated assignment of a dietitian to their CKD patient population is needed.

Objectives:
a. Explain the pathophysiology and mechanisms of the impact of macro- and micro- nutrients on glomerular pressure and filtration as well as disease progression.
b. Dissect the differential impact of low protein diet on kidney health and disease progression.
c. Identify examples of real cases with CKD in whom nutritional management may have an impact on the course of the disease progression and outcomes.
d. Discern the mutual expectations of physicians and dietitians from each other pertaining to the nutritional management of patients with kidney disease.
