UC Irvine Otolaryngology Graduation and Multidisciplinary Thyroid Cancer Symposium
Current Practices and Controversies
Activity Details
Activity Name: UC Irvine Otolaryngology Graduation and Multidisciplinary Thyroid Cancer Symposium
Description: Current Practices and Controversies
Needs Assessment: Gap: Patients with thyroid cancer require a collaborative, multidisciplinary treatment team, consisting of surgeons, endocrinologists, oncologists, and pathologists. Management and workup of thyroid cancer has undergone a revolution, with molecular testing and ultrasound imaging helping to more precisely guide treatment decisions. There is significant demand across all disciplines to better understand the workup and management of thyroid cancer.
Best Practices: Through didactic lectures and expert panels of otolaryngologists, endocrine surgeons, endocrinologists, and oncologists we will provide state of the art information for our attendees. Techniques of ultrasound, diagnosis of nodules through molecular testing, and both surgical and postoperative treatments will be reviewed.
Gap: Surveillance of patients after thyroid cancer, and workup for common associated conditions and treatment sequelae, requires a multidisciplinary effort. Knowledge gaps exist within each discipline as to how to most effectively collaborate so as to maximize efficiency of healthcare delivery to the patients.
Best Practices: Through expert panels and multidisciplinary didactics, we will discuss complex management and diagnostic dilemmas that frequently arise after surgical treatment of thyroid cancer. The usage of imaging, molecular diagnostics, and genetic testing will be discussed in the setting of thyroid malignancy.
Course Objectives: Objectives:
* Explain the role of ultrasound in the workup of thyroid nodules
* Explain how molecular testing is used to guide treatment decisions
* Access and utilize expert perspectives on the surgical management of thyroid cancer
* Describe the role of a multidisciplinary team in the surveillance of patients after thyroid cancer treatment
