UCLA Steve Tisch BrainSPORT Program Concussion Champions Course
Activity Details
Activity Name: UCLA Steve Tisch BrainSPORT Program Concussion Champions Course
Needs Assessment:

This course provides hands-on interactive training to help providers standardize and implement evidence-based concussion diagnostic and treatment practices for their patients. California State Law (AB 2007) requires anyone 18 years or younger to be evaluated by a healthcare provider trained in concussion if a concussion is suspected by their school or youth sports organization. Course participants will walk away with the tools they need to provide the highest level of concussion care including: EMR templates, educational materials and more.

Many student athletes who sustain a concussion at local schools will initially present to their primary care provider, which is appropriate. One challenge, however, is the variability in return to activity/school/play recommendations by medical providers. This creates logistical issues for the schools’ primary mission to educate students, as well as difficulties in determining when to return to sport activities in a manner that is both consistent and safe. This course aims to close this gap by providing an update for management of youth concussions to primary care physicians and other health care providers involved in the multidisciplinary care of student athletes and to assist in appropriate referral of complex cases to a multidisciplinary concussion specialty program.

Course Objectives:

At the conclusion of this course, participants will be better able to:

  • Serve as “Concussion Champions” at your respective clinic and throughout Los Angeles County by being current on sports-concussion management for athletes, ages 5-25.
  • Relate the risks and benefits of sports participation to families, including the relative risks for concussion in different sports and different conditions.
  • Use a multimodal clinical concussion assessment test battery that may include symptoms, cognition (including computerized testing), balance, reaction time and number reading.
  • Develop an individualized management plan for youths with concussion, including return to school, return to physical activity and return to contact risk.
  • Relate to families the potential risks of repetitive concussions based upon peer-reviewed publications and yet also be aware of current information circulated through the media.
  • Appropriately refer complex patients, initiate proper treatment, and understand circumstances for recommending retirement from a particular sport.
