Activity Name: 43rd Annual UC Davis Diabetes & Endocrinology Symposium
Needs Assessment: This course is designed to change physician competence in the management of patients with Diabetes (type 1 and 2) and obesity, as well as endocrine disorders such as thyroid nodules; injectable therapies for osteoporosis; hormonal causes of hypertension; diagnosis, surgical and medical management of pituitary disorders; and the most recent information from NIH trials about testosterone replacement in older men. This year?s conference will specifically address newer technologies for automatic infusion of insulin and monitoring of glucose to improve health and provide practitioners with state-of-the-art tools to serve their patients. The topics have been selected in response to participant evaluations from previous CME activities. The faculty presenting and interacting with participants have been selected on the basis of their comprehensive clinical experience and academic excellence. Interactive question and answer sessions will be combined with case discussions in small group settings for increased learning.
Course Objectives: At the end of the activity, participants should be able to:
  • Influence patients to make changes to improve health
  • Define and use currently available insulins at right time schedule, type and dose appropriately
  • Explain how the new hybrid automatic insulin pump functions and how it can improve glucose control
  • Recognize how continuous glucose sensing can improve glucose control, which will soon be covered by Medicare
  • Summarize nutritional principles in order to help patients adjust diets for improved cardiovascular health
  • Recognize when new treatment options for type 2 diabetes can improve cardiovascular outcomes, therapies, and justify how to combine or switch
  • List the new approaches to thyroid nodule management
  • Name the current parenteral therapies used for osteoporosis treatment
  • Recognize hypertensive patients who require endocrine work up
  • Identify the warning signs of pituitary disorders and learn how to
  • Recognize state-of-the-art surgical and medical tools available for pituitary tumor patients
  • Interpret the latest information regarding testosterone replacement controversy in elderly men
