UCLA Symposium on Advances in Treatment of Aortic Pathology
Activity Details
Activity Name: UCLA Symposium on Advances in Treatment of Aortic Pathology
Needs Assessment: The UCLA Symposium on Advances in Treatment of Aortic Pathology, sponsored by the UCLA Aortic Center, is a one-day self-assessment CME course that will present advances in endovascular technology, open surgical options, and provide rationale for conservative management of aortic diseases. The course will also focus on patient selection, evaluation, and imaging. Presentations for physicians will highlight the technical aspects of open surgical and endovascular therapies. Management of potential complications of the various interventions will also be discussed. Parallel morning and afternoon sessions for allied health care personnel (i.e., nurses, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants) will be presented, concentrating on anatomy, definitions, natural history, patient and family education, and preoperative, perioperative and postoperative management of patients with aortic diseases.
Course Objectives: At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to: ? Describe the anatomy of the aorta and the various pathologies ? Understand genetic abnormalities in aortic pathology ? Recognize long-term complications after type A aortic dissection ? Identify factors that influence decisions in the management of patients with aortic aneurysms ? Differentiate the management between type A versus type B aortic dissection ? Describe the management of penetrating aortic ulcer and intramural hematoma ? Manage aortic trauma with currently available options ? Understand the pathophysiology that leads to the formation of aneurysms and or aortic dissection ? Manage patients with chronic type B aortic dissection ? List the indications for surgical repair of the aortic arch ? Identify the symptoms and manage aorto visceral occlusive disease ? Select the most appropriate aortic imaging in patients with renal insufficiency ? Understand endovascular alternatives ? Formulate alternative strategies for hybrid repair of complex aortic pathology ? Formulate a plan to reduce the risk of paraplegia in aortic surgery ? Explain the potential role of polymer technology in the treatment of aortic pathology ? Describe when and why alternative approaches to aortic pathology should be used such as snorkels, chimneys, or fenestrated repair ? Describe periarterial sac embolization for prevention and treatment of endo-leaks ? Explain the potential liability associated with aortic pathology ? Recognize aortic pathology in the pediatric patient ? Provide patient and family education regarding aortic pathology
