How Are We Exploiting the Pathogenesis of IBD to Improve Treatment

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a condition that affects approximately 1 to 1.3 million people in the United States alone. While we understand that both ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn’s disease are distinct entities, both originate from similar risk factors and environmental causes. The current state of treatment for these conditions can be improved by a deeper understanding of the pathophysiology of IBD. Dr. Maria Abreu presents updates from ongoing research into genetic and environmental factors that lead to the development of IBD and how these studies are changing the way we think about and manage it.

At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Identify risk factors, both inherited and acquired, that lead to intestinal inflammation and the development of inflammatory bowel disease.
  2. Describe how ongoing research among immigrant populations to the U.S. contributes to knowledge of genetic and environmental risk factors involved in inflammatory bowel disease.
  3. Counsel patients regarding modifiable risk factors that lead to or exacerbate IBD.

Maintenance of Certification (MOC) for American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM):

Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables the participant to earn up to 1 MOC point in the American Board of Internal Medicine’s (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. Participants will earn MOC points equivalent to the amount of CME credits claimed for the activity. It is the CME activity provider’s responsibility to submit participant completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABIM MOC credit.

The UCLA Office of Continuing Medical Education will report your MOC Points to the American Board of Internal Medicine at the end of this calendar month. The ABIM will update your account once your points are processed.
