45th Annual Advances in Internal Medicine
Now in its 45th year, this course reviews the most recent developments and current controversies in the field of internal medicine. Particular emphasis will be placed on topics of clinical relevance to the practicing physician. Offered in May and June!

In addition to CME credit, participants will also earn credit toward Geriatrics and Pain requirements in their states. ABIM diplomates also have the opportunity to earn MOC points.

Activity Name: 45th Annual Advances in Internal Medicine
Description: Now in its 45th year, this course reviews the most recent developments and current controversies in the field of internal medicine. Particular emphasis will be placed on topics of clinical relevance to the practicing physician. Offered in May and June!

Needs Assessment: The course will include:
  • Didactic Lectures: Clinically active faculty from the Department of Medicine will emphasize recent clinical advances.
  • Year-in-Review Literature Reviews: Faculty will review major articles from the general medical specialty literature with immediate importance to clinical practice.
  • Clinical Dilemmas: In addition to case presentations to illustrate current management strategies, a special session on clinical problem-solving will be included.
  • Questions and Answers: Ample time will be provided for specific questions and discussions of problems commonly encountered by course participants.
  • Internal Medicine Topics: Areas to be covered include cardiology, geriatrics, endocrinology, general internal medicine, women's health, infectious diseases, rheumatology, hematology and oncology, gastroenterology, neurology and pulmonary disease.
  • Multidisciplinary Topics: Additional topics of interest to the practicing internist will include issues in women's health, geriatrics, emergency & hospital medicine, and neurology.
Course Objectives: he purpose of this course is to increase competence and improve clinician practice in internal medicine. We specifically anticipate improvements in skills and strategies to:
  1. Better manage commonly encountered chronic medical problems such as hyperlipidemia, diabetes, osteoporosis, obstructive lung disease, gout, and headaches, as well as acute conditions such as skin and soft tissue infections, diarrhea, and musculoskeletal injuries;
  2. Bring practice patterns more in line with current evidence and guidelines with respect to atrial fibrillation, coronary artery disease, chronic kidney disease, anticoagulation management, contraception, and preoperative medical evaluation;
  3. Manage common problems traditionally treated by specialists, such as heart failure, Hepatitis B & C infections, end-of-life care, rheumatoid arthritis, as well as recognize the indications for referral to a subspecialist.
