Clinical Dermatology Update for the Primary Care Practitioner
Activity Details
Activity Name: Clinical Dermatology Update for the Primary Care Practitioner
Needs Assessment: The conference on Clinical Dermatology will respond to areas of need as identified through past conference evaluations. The program is knowledge and experience-based and designed to update participants on the diagnosis and treatment of a wide variety of common and serious dermatologic conditions.
Primary care providers have a tremendous challenge to initially evaluate all medical problems brought to them by their patients. However, few primary care residency programs provide satisfactory exposure to dermatologic diseases and treatments. This course is designed to assist primary care practitioners in adopting a logical approach to the diagnosis of a wide variety of common and serious dermatologic conditions employing the Lynch algorithm. Beyond this, the emphasis will be upon treatment of diverse skin problems and determination of the appropriate times to refer to a dermatologist. Adequate time and opportunity will be provided for discussion of cases and for questions, particularly during breakfast sessions and panel discussions.
Course Objectives: At the end of the activity, participants should be able to:
  • Accurately describe skin lesions
  • Use an algorithmic approach to dermatologic diagnosis
  • Recognize serious dermatologic diseases, such as bullous diseases, drug eruptions, and exanthems to determine the initial approach or referral strategy
  • Confidently diagnose and treat common skin diseases such as acne, rosacea, psoriasis, eczematous diseases, apthous ulcers, cutaneous ulcers, and pigmentary conditions
  • Recognize benign and malignant skin tumors and know the best modes of treatment
  • Recognize when and how to perform skin biopsies and simple procedures
