Cervical Cancer Screening and Diagnostic Follow Up
Activity Name:
Cervical Cancer Screening and Diagnostic Follow Up
Activity Information:
Expert Needs:
The Institute for Public Health works in collaboration with the California Department of Health Care Services (CDHCS), Every Woman Counts (EWC) program (part of the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program). EWC provides free breast and cervical cancer screening and diagnostic services to low-income, uninsured, and underinsured women. This course was developed as part of Every Woman Count?s commitment to improve the knowledge and skills of health professionals for successful implementation of high-quality breast and cervical cancer detection and control.
The Cervical Cancer Expert Workgroup was assembled by EWC and IPH to identify training needs and to provide direction for the development of the resulting professional education activity. Members were asked to identify areas of cervical cancer screening and diagnosis for which primary care clinicians would need additional training and guidance.
Concomitant with the convening of the Expert Workgroup, the co-directors of the activity reviewed the literature base to determine which areas of screening and diagnosis had 1) recently changed, 2) lacked clarity for clinicians, or 3) had been identified as areas requiring training and reinforcement. (Massad 2012, Saslow 2012, Haas 2015)
Participant Needs:
A needs assessment was sent to 132 California clinicians participating in the Every Woman Counts program. The clinicians identified themselves as a Nurse Practitioner, Physician, Physician Assistant, or Certified Nurse-midwife. The clinicians were asked to rate their level of need for information on a variety of topics related to cervical cancer screening and diagnosis as well as patient care.
