Sunlight and Your Health: An EnLIGHTening Perspective with Dr. Michael Holick
Activity Description This presentation is meant to help attendees understand “Sunlight 101” including spectral output and differences between various wavelengths, how the skin responds to those various wavelengths, and positive and negative consequences of exposure. Michael F. Holick, PhD MD, Boston University Medical Center gives an energetic talk on the impacts of sunlight on your health. How can we balance current thinking on the negative effects of sun exposure with new research on its benefits? How does sunlight help in the production of vitamin D? Join Dr. Holick as he explains how sunlight reaches us, how it is absorbed by the skin and much more. Objectives Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
1. Identify the spectral output of sunlight and the differences between UVB, UVA, visible and infrared radiation.
2. Identify the context of historical aspects of inadequate sun exposure as it relates to the epidemic of rickets.
3. Identify how the skin responds to various wavelengths of solar radiation in different ways – responses include production of vitamin D, nitric oxide, and beta-endorphin.
4. List 3 novel uses of ultraviolet and visible radiation for treatment: psoriasis, aging skin, and hair loss and for enhancing wound healing.
5. Describe the importance of circadian rhythm genes, melatonin, intensity and duration of sunlight and seasonal affective disorder.
6. Identify 3 negative consequences of excessive exposure, including DNA damage, increased oxygen radicals, and collagen cross-linking.
