Activity Details
Activity Name: 11th Anniversary of the Annual UC Davis Psychotic Disorders Conference
Needs Assessment: While the focus of management of people with psychotic illness has been on symptoms control, recent advancement in the assessment of functioning as well as novel therapies such as cognitive rehabilitation, supported education and employment and new models of care delivery including early psychosis specialty care have brought a new emphasis on improving functioning in people with serious mental illness. You will receive an update on these new approaches form the nations leading expert in the field. Bipolar illness is common in community practice and it is increasingly recognized that long-term disability is very high in the illness, approaching or at times exceeding that seen in other serious mental illnesses. Comprehensive community care can have a major impact on the course of illness and this model will be described with application to the daily care of individuals with Bipolar Disorder. This approach can be infirmed by understanding the ways in which processing emotions and rewards in serious mental illness is altered and Dr Tulley will provide new insights from the field of psychiatric neuroscience. Genetics are a major contributing factor to the causes of serious mental illness and there have been major advances in this field over the past few years. These will be reviewed by UC Davis expert psychiatric geneticist. Finally aggression and violence are rare but serious complications of serious mental illness and we will explore the complex relationship between these tow factors as well as new clinical approaches to addressing them.
