Neurology Update 2015 for the Primary Care Practitioner
Activity Details
Activity Name:
Neurology Update 2015 for the Primary Care Practitioner
Needs Assessment:
The UC Davis Health System is committed to discovering and sharing knowledge to advance health. Every year over 50 million Americans visit a physician with a neurological complaint. Only a small percentage of these patients will see a neurologist, the vast majority will need to be appropriately evaluated and managed by primary care providers. As a result of course participant evaluations and community physician annual needs assessment surveys, the need for cutting edge information about neurology has been identified. The course is knowledge based and designed to change physician performance in areas identified in the needs assessment and will provide participants with skills in managing common neurological complaints in the primary care setting. Topics will include seizures, multiple sclerosis, dementia, neuropathies/myopathies, critical care and outpatient management of stroke. Participants will be educated on when neurological consultation should be sought and become familiar with the resources available.
Course Objectives:
At the end of the program, participants should be able to:
Apply the diagnosis and management strategies for Multiple Sclerosis
Establish the diagnosis of and choose treatment options for Parkinson’s disease
Describe new recommendations for the management of acute stroke as it pertains to a primary care physician
Apply medical management of neuropathic pain
Choose the best combination of medications to reduce pain
Explain workup for common neuropathies
Compare basic antiepileptic medication strategies
Identify and manage common types of dementia syndromes
Use EEG testing appropriately to maximize patient benefits
Formulate a work up for weakness
